LEDs have many advantages over incandescent light sources.

They come in many different colors, and that makes them very good indicators.
If you think about it - almost all consumer electronic devices have some
sort of LED in them.

The maximum current for the standard 5mm
diameter LEDs is typically 20mA. The amount of voltage they require differs
with color. You can use resistors to apply safe current to them.
